The sea before the temple
Located outside the eastern entrance of the Ramanathaswamy Temple, Agni Theertham is the sacred seashore where pilgrims begin their spiritual journey with a ritual bath before entering the temple.
Cleansing before worship
Agni Theertham is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, Narada Purana, and Sethu Purana, and is believed to cleanse sins and prepare devotees for worship. Local tradition also links this shoreline to Lord Rama's preparations before crossing to Lanka.
The waters are usually calm and shallow, making them ideal for ritual bathing.
Mornings by the shore
Early mornings are the busiest, with vendors offering flowers and other puja items nearby. Basic changing facilities are available for pilgrims taking the ritual bath.
Sunrise, or a quiet evening
Sunrise (5:00–6:00 AM) offers the most peaceful and spiritually enriching experience, while evenings provide beautiful sunset views over the water.
