The 22 Sacred Theerthams are holy wells within the Ramanathaswamy Temple, forming an essential part of the Rameshwaram pilgrimage. Although the island has 64 sacred water bodies in total, these 22 wells are the most revered and are visited before darshan.

A number with meaning

Tradition links the wells to the 22 arrows in Lord Rama's quiver, symbolizing spiritual purification. Each well is believed to have distinct water properties — some described as sweet, some saline, some mineral-rich — despite their close proximity to one another and to the sea.

This is one of the details that surprises first-time visitors most: wells just a few metres apart, drawing from the same coastal aquifer, yet each said to taste and feel distinctly different.

The Ritual

How the Teertha Snanam works

01

Agni Theertham first

Pilgrims usually begin with a ritual dip at Agni Theertham, the sea shore just outside the temple's East Gate.

02

The 22-well bath

Followed by the Teertha Snanam — temple attendants draw water from each of the 22 wells and pour it over devotees in a prescribed sequence.

03

30–45 minutes, start to finish

The full ritual, from Agni Theertham through all 22 wells, typically takes half an hour to 45 minutes.

Before You Go In

What to bring, and how to behave

Visitors are advised to carry a change of clothes, walk carefully on the wet floors, and observe temple rules by maintaining cleanliness, modest attire, and respect for this sacred ritual.

Practical Tips

Making the ritual comfortable

Carry a change of clothes

You'll be thoroughly wet by the end of the sequence — pack a full change, including footwear, in a waterproof bag.

Mind the wet floors

Stone floors around the wells get slippery. Move slowly, especially if you're visiting with elderly family members or children.
